All often I read and see people just allow a pup to be a pup and watch as this pup grows up with no guidance on pack and is allowed to get away with bad behaviors and then get upset as the dog matures that good behaviors don't just magically appear.
There are so many little things that can be done to help mold and shape a pup to being that better dog and bird dog in the future with out ruining the dog,
Beginning with important things like
Being Still Stand for you food, stand to be advanced to ,stand to get your leash on, stand to be brushed, stand to get your paws checked, stand to be rewarded, any time you have your hands on the pup or dog or need to come to you dog like on point your dog has a job and that is to be still
Giving into pressure Give to the leash, Give to the stake out or chain gang, give to the collar, give to the being asked to do something
Going with you In the field your dog/pup should go the same direction you are going when on a leash the dog should be going with you and keying of your leads and direction
Coming to you Here what I work with as young dogs if I am moving in the field the dog should cue off where I am moving and move the same direction But if I stop the dog should work their way back to me. When you first begin this a very common inclination is to quickly grab and leash a dog. Don't do that just stay still let the dog do drive bys if they stall out on you at a bit of a distance stand up and walk away as soon as the dog begins to move stop moving..What you are looking for is the dog to come to you and ready to come..Pet the dog up calmly and then walk on letting the dog learn coming to you isn't always about being leashed up and the funs stops.
Another thing if you have a dog that you have no control over do yourself and everyone a favor stop yelling dogs name and command and just go with the dog and try and cut in front of the dogs direction by once the dogs sees you in the field or area turn and walk a different direction. Chasing hollering with no way to back up your command is only teaching the dog commands means nothing and you will only make yourself upset ..Then No matter How MAD you are Never ever reprimand a dog that has come to you Pet and reward and gently leash and walk dog back. Be mad at yourself for not having control as Your all your dog will know is that if you reprimand for him coming to you, that it was him coming to you that gets punished not because he was running around not responding to your screaming and hollering for him to come.
If you have your dog/pup in a crate or on the chain gang/stake out if the dog is bouncing barking extra DO NOT ADVANCE No matter the distance you are from the dog stop even turn around do not give dog eye contact or command just ignore the dog once the dog quiets and settles THEN turn or advance towards the dog AS SOON as the dog begins loosing composure of being still STOP DO NOT ADVANCE until the dog has completely settled again. If you take the time when you start out with the dog or pup this nice standing being quiet will be come a habit for the dog If you don't do not expect the dog to settle as when you do not take the effort the dog only learns to be in a hyper state of mind when you are around
If you do not work at the dog being still to your touch or presences don't get upset at the dog for bouncing you in the chin and having a hard time clipping the lead or leash on because YOU elected not to take the efforts into helping your dog having good manners this is directly your fault not that of the dog as they only know what they are allowed to get away with ...What you allow them to do You are training them to do. Manners do not come with out effort and some self discipline to help your dog to attain them.
When you make excuses for your dog/pup You will not help your dog change. When you let go of the past you and your dog can get onto the future.
